Haemodynamic Monitoring Flashcards
What is the patented term for pulmonary artery catheter?
Swan Ganz Catheter
What questions does haemodynamic monitoring answer?
Does the patient need diuretics, inotropes, vasopressors or vasodilators?
What are you measuring when you take a patient’s blood pressure?
Cardiac output x systemic vascular resistance
What is systemic vascular resistance?
The resistance the left ventricle must work against in order to eject its stroke volume.
What is the formula for MAP or Mean Arterial Pressure?
MAP = 2 times DBP + SBP divided by 3
What is one dependent factor for increased left ventricular resistance?
The compressibility of the arterial beds.
What can happen to blood vessels, especially arteries, if they chronically have to work against high forces due to compression or hardening?
It will eventually become enlarged.
What are 2 reasons a patient could have “clamped down vessels?
Hypertension and fluid overload.
What pharmacological class of drugs is used to relieve hypertension due to vasoconstriction? Hint: not antihypertensives.
Vasodilators.
When vasodilators dilate the blood vessels what is the haemodynamic effect on the body?
Cardiac Output increases.
What value must the MAP be to diffuse vital organs?
60mmHg
Where is the optimum site to measure MAP?
The Aorta.
What is the formula for cardiac output?
CO = HR x SV
What is the formula for ejection fraction?
EJ = SV/EDV
What is the cardiac index?
Cardiac output per body surface area.
