Still a class system but it is less obvious and upward social mobility is much more likely due to sport

Changes in wealth, education and occupation over a person’s lifetime

If you are talented and committed but this will only happen for a few

Can afford membership fees and equipment
Greater opportunity at places like university

Taylor report made - modernisation of stadiums - all seater stadiums - more middle class supporters
What was the impact of the premier league being introduced in 1992?
Marketed as an elite experience, increase amount of upper/middle class spectators. More middle class and affluent wealthy supporters led to more commercialism which led to rise in ticket prices
What type of sports are middle/upper class people associated with?
Sports that are expensive and associated with elitist clubs
Eg polo, yachting and golf
What has changed about amateurism and professionalism?
Now a wide mix of people from different social backgrounds playing as both amateurs and professionals

Different genders
What is the main point of gender affecting sport?
Still gender discrimination
Why are men more involved in sport than women?
Media - more knowledge/opportunity/role models
More teams at grassroots level - more opportunity
What sports/activities for health/fitness are associated with women?
Netball, gymnastics, dance, zumba, yoga, pilates. (not many)
What sports are associated with men?
Rugby, boxing, basketball, football, cricket (much more)
What is an example of women sport growing because of success?
England women’s rugby won world cup, 20 players got contracts, role models to young girls, increasing participation
