  2. Once flipped, the other hand is cupped on the casualty’s chin
  3. Ask if the casualty is alright to see if there’s a response
  4. Use the leading hand to swim side stroke to the side of the pool for assistance

How to do the vice grip?

A
  1. Approach the casualty and knock their left arm back
  2. Use your left arm on their chin and your right on the top of the scull, with both arms keeping the body secure
  3. Slowly move under water while the hand and arm move to is tight, so the casualty is moving face up
  4. Ask if the casualty is okay to see if they’re responsive
  5. Tow them back but with your arms still securing the casualty

How to do the head splint?

A
  1. Move hand so they’re above their head (only do this if they’re no already)
  2. Use both hands to squeeze them against their head, while the thumbs are resting on the top of head, and the fingers around their ears (not covering them)
  3. Flip them around slowly so they’re facing you

Name the steps of saving a casualty in shallow water with spinal problem

  1. Use head splint to turn them over
  2. The second lifeguard will support the head
  3. A third will secure the body
  4. The fourth will move the arms up and to the casualty’s sides and them secure the feet
  5. They will move the casualty simultaneously to the side
  6. The last lifeguard will secure the head when the casualty’s head reaches poolside

A

Chest, head, hips and ankles

A

Knocking their head on the side of the pool with full force
