What are letter strings?

A

Letters appear in repeating pattern, first letters mastered are usually child’s name. No concepts of word indicated by lack of spacing. Letters do not represent sounds followed by groups of letters to look like words.

What are invented spellings?

A

Letters represent sounds, becoming aware of concepts of words. Becoming aware of print conventions. Correct letter formation will developing - letters may be reversed or have extra lines. Child may/not able to read/remember what is written.

A simple sentence consist of a single clause. 
Every clause has a subject and a verb. 
The dog eats. 
Subject - dog
Verb - eats  
Other elements in the sentence can be objects. 
The dog eats a bone
The object will be bone.

What do compound sentences include?

A

Has two or more clauses joined often by - and, or, but, or and so. The clauses are of equal weight - they, are both main clauses.
It was late BUT I wasn’t tired.
The night was dark AND the wind howled.
We could have chips OR we could have pizza.

What are complex sentences?

A

This consists of a main clause and one or more subordinate clauses joined by a conjunction.
I WASN’T TIRED although IT WAS LATE.
These sentences use subordinating conjunction. A complex sentence the order of the clauses can be changed but the main clause remains the main clause etc.
I WASN’T TIRED although IT WAS LATE
Although IT WAS LATE, I WASN’T tired.

What are subordinating conjunctions?

A

They are used to link causes within a complex sentence. Modelling writing id important as a teacher. You are the example to children, you show how to write letters, you let children know it’s ok to make mistakes you model the process and celebrate the act of writing.

A

They give the importance to the words or sentence they connect FAN BOYS for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

How do colourful semantics help children?

A

Visual support to help children understand word classes and sentence structure. Colourful semantics is a support structure for writing sentences. Children can use words or images under the colours to form sentences.
