Q

Why might only in-situ conservation not work?

A

• Destruction of habitats and fragmentation
• Pest species distribution
• Hunting
• Secondary effects: pollution, global warming, super-nitrification
• Conservation of habitats is resource expensive but conservation as a cause is poor.
• War
• Legal Entities can be changed (national parks revoked)
• Size may be too small for a viable population
All animals requirements may not be within the conserved areas. (outside areas also affect inside areas)

Q

What can the captive wild animal industry add to conservation efforts?

A
  • Ex-situ captive breeding!!
    • Up close education of human audience
    • Controlled research
    • Governmental influence (because industry size)
    • Extra revenue and logistical resource (zoo money handed to various in-situ projects, education and aid for outside programs)
    • An ark for species that are or might go extinct in the wild
    • Expertise created for captive breeding, animal husbandry, and population management. (the experts tend to be here)

Q

Is captive breeding viable? (concerns people have)

A
  • Too few species can be saved
    • Survival in the wild
    • Lack of knowledge on species
    • Species concepts vs nature
    • Ideal individual issues
    • Inbreeding and genetic variation issues (small pops)
    • Coordination issues across captive establishments
