extraction of metals from their ores Flashcards

1
Q

extraction of iron

A
  • iron extracted from haematite containing iron(III) oxide, clay and sand in a blast furnace
    1) coke reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide
    2) carbon dioxide reacts with more coke to form carbon monoxide
    3) carbon monoxide reduces iron(III) oxide to iron
    4) calcium carbonate(linestone) is decomposed to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
    5) calcium oxide+sand(silicon dioxide) forms calcium silicate(slag)
  • co, co2 and n2 escapes from the top of the furnace
