animal tissues 🪱 Flashcards

1
Q

Epithelial tissue

A
  • specialized to form linings that cover internal and external surfaces
  • cells are arranged tightly against each other, with almost no intercellular spaces
~ squamous, cuboidial, columnar, ciliated columnar epithelium

Q

Squamous epithelium

A
  • (squashed) ; ( mosaic)
  • lines internal walls of cavities : blood vessels, heart, alveoli, mouth, oesophagus
  • single layer of flat, thin cells
  • protects underlying tissues
  • prevents friction

Q

Cuboidal ephithelium

A
  • lines glands that secrete or absorb substances
  • lining of: thyroid gland, sweat
    gland, salivary gland, ovaries
  • cube shaped cells
  • round nuclei in centre of cell
  • for secretion and absorption on substances

Q

Columnar epithelium

A
  • lines alimentary canal: stomach, intestine
  • cells are long and column shaped
  • have goblet cells that secrete mucus
  • for absorption, secretion, a d sensation

Q

Ciliated columnar epithelium

A
  • lines :nasal cavities,trachea,bronchi ;
  • found in :ears, fallopian tubes, uterus
  • has fine hairs (cilia)
  • clilia perform fast, rhythmical wave-like movements in a specific direction
  • helps detect stimuli in sensory organs

Q

Connective tissue

A
  • binds, supports, surrounds other tissues or organs

- areolar connective tissue, dense connective tissue, cartilage, bone ,blood

Q

Areolar connective tissue

A
  • connects skin to underlying muscles
  • serves as packing tissue ; fills space between organs, blood vessels, nerves and muscles
  • has: •white inelastic collagen fibres • yellow elastic fibres
  • serves as insulating material
  • protects organs by serving as a packing tissue

Q

Dense connective tissue

A
  • joins muscle to bone ( tendons *white inelastic fibres )
  • joins bone to bone ( ligaments * yellow elastic fibres)
  • allow for movement

Q

Cartilage

A
  • tough, elastic connective tissue that forms part of endoskeleton
  • hyaline, fibrous, elastic
  • occurs between bones ; lines joints
  • connects bone to bone
  • acts as a shock absorber between vertebrae
  • prevents friction in joints

Q

Bone

A
  • similar to cartilage, but harder
  • contains of a hard matrix
  • is a supporting framework that gives shape and rigidity
  • protects delicate organs
  • place of attachment to muscles to make movement possible
  • mineral storage

Q

Blood

A
  • only liquid connective tissue
  • has no fibres
  • sticky, dark- red, opaque fluid
  • circulates in the blood vessels of the bold system : arteries, veins, capillaries
  • red blood cells, white blood cells, blood platelets
  • transports nutrients from the digestive system to tissues
  • produce antibodies that destroyed bacteria and viruses
