Q

What is Angiotensinogen, where is it produced, and where is it found?

A

A large protein produced by the liver that circulates in blood

Q

Where can you find Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)?

A

Endothelial cells of the lungs

-converts the Angio I into a potent hormone called ANGIOTENSIN II

Q

side note:

A

ACE inhibitors work on this system and are used to protect the kidneys from HBP damage over time

Q

Where are Angiotensin II receptors found?

A

Smooth muscles of blood vessels
-reception will cause vasoconstriction of these vessels and cause increased resistance
-Bind the receptors on the efferent arterioles of the kidneys (afferent arterioles don’t have many receptors and will only constrict when lots of Angio II is present)
-efferent constriction results in more blood remaining in the glomerulus, “preserving” GFR
-afferent and efferent constriction results in decreased GFR and renal blood flow to conserve blood volume

Q

What else does Angiotensin II do?

A

Binds to receptors of PCT which activates reabsorption of more Na+/water

speaks to the hypothalamus, which increases thirst and releases ADH (causing water reabsorption in the DCT and collecting duct)

Q

What determines blood pressure?

total circulating blood volume (x) total body resistance

(resistance=constriction essentially)
