17
Q

Where do paramecium live?

A

Inhabit pond water, oceans, lakes, rivers, and soils

18
Q

Are paramecium large or small?

A

large

19
Q

How do paramecium eat?

A

Paramecia are grazers, ingesting any nutritious particles they encounter (organic particles, bacteria, yeast, other protists)

20
Q

What helps paramecium eat?

A

cilia

21
Q

Where is food digested in paramecium?

A

food vaucle

22
Q

Where is the digested nutrients excreted in paramecium?

A

cytoplasma

23
Q

Where is undigested food excreted in paramecium?

A

anal pore

24
Q

What is the mouth of the paramecium called?

A

gullet

25
Q

What happens when paramecium eat toxic bacteria?

A

can die or develop immunity

26
Q

Paramecium can associate with what? how does this relationship work?

A

endosymbiotic algae, The algae produce energy from light and the paramecia are motile and can move the algae towards the surface

27
Q

How many nuclei do paramecium have? names?

A

TWO nuclei: micronucleus and macronucleus

28
Q

What does the micronucleus contain?

A

DNA with copies of ALL genes (i.e. regular nucleus)

29
Q

What does the macronucleus contain?

A

many (40-1,000) copies of selected genes needed for growth –RNA factory!

30
Q

How do paramecia reproduce?

A

binary fission (asexually) and sexually (conjugation)

31
Q

How do paramecia decrease how long it takes to reproduce?

A

the macronucleus containing 100s of copies of the genes needed to divide, has a lot of mRNA

32
Q

How does sexually reproduction take place in paramecia?

A

connect using their gullets.
macronucleus disintegrates, and the micronucleus divides by meiosis twice (4N).
3 disintegrate and the remaining one divides by mitosis (2N) and exchange 1 copy with their mate.
After exchange, the cells separate and the 2 nuclei fuse and eventually develop into the micro and macronucleus.

33
Q

What causes malaria?

A

plasmodium which is a protist
