Hormones Flashcards
Hormone
chemical messenger created by a cell that changes the cellular activity of other cells
Endocrine glands
secrete hormones directly into surrounding spaces
-then transported via blood
How to neurotransmitters affect the body
act immediately on body but only last a little bit (nervous system)
Are hormones fast acting?
No, hormones take longer to created intended effect on body
Hormones are classified into 4 different groups:
- Amine
- Peptide
- Steroid
- Protein
Amine Hormones
amino acids with modified groups
ex. norepinephrine
Peptide Hormones
shorts chains of linked amino acids
ex. oxytocin
Protein Hormone
Long chains of amino acids
ex. Human Growth Hormone
Steroid Hormones
Derived from lipid cholesterol
ex. testosterone and progesterone
How do hormones take action?
hormones in blood diffuse into fluids around cell
-the cell may have specific receptors for hormone
Lipid soluble hormones
diffuse through the cell membrane of target cells
Water soluble hormones
bind to receptor protein on the plasma membrane of the cell
1st stimuli that releases hormones from endocrine gland
Hormones from other endocrine glands
-ex. anterior pituitary glands releases TSH to trigger thyroid to release T4 and T3
2nd stimuli that releases hormones from endocrine gland
The chemistry of the blood
-ex. after a meal, glucose is detected in the blood, therefore pancreas releases insulin
3rd stimuli that releases hormones from endocrine gland
Nerve stimulation
-ex. sympathetic nervous system triggers release of epinephrine in fight or flight
