Chapter 4 LO1 Power Generation Flashcards

1
Q

Name nine different forms and give a description and example of each

A

Kinetic - Energy associated with motion. EX a person walking

Thermal - Energy contained by a body which is responsible for its temperature. EX a hot cup of coffee has more thermal energy than a cold cup.

Gravitational Potential - Energy possessed by a body due to its height above a point. EX an apple which has been raised up has gained gpe.

Chemical - Energy stored in materials when they are deformed. EX food, batteries fuels such as petrol and diesel.

Sound - Energy processed by a medium vibrating due to a disturbance.

Electrical - Energy due to the amount of electrical changes. EX electric in a home or phone.

Elastic Potential - Energy stored in materials when they are deformed EX a stretched elastic band or a stretched spring.

Nuclear - Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. EX Nuclear Fission and fusion.

Radiant - Energy from electromagnetic waves from the sun. EX Energy to heat the Earth, power solar PV and thermal systems.

Q

What does heat mean and how does it differ from thermal energy

A

Heat is the transfer of energy from one point to another. Thermal energy is in the body when it is conveyed away (cooling) or towards (heating up) the body.
