Q

Explain the difference between atoms, molecules and elements

A

Atoms - the smallest particles; ie the building blocks of all substances
Molecules - atoms chemically bound together
Elements - contain only one sort of atom

Q

How do you work out the mass of a molecule?

A

Add the atomic masses of the atoms present together.
For example carbon dioxide is made of 1 atom of carbon and 2 atoms of oxygen
Therefore 12 + (2 x 16)
= 44
