1.2 Atomic Theory Flashcards
(15 cards)
What did the Greek philosopher Demcritus believed?
That matter is composed of tiny indivisible particles and called these particles “atomos” meaning “inidivisble” in the greek
What was the Dalton’s atomic theory?
- Matter consists of definite particles called atoms
- Each element is made up of its own type of atom
- Each element has different properties
- Atoms cannot be created, destroyed or subdivided.
- Atoms of two or more elements can combine in constant ratios to form a new substance called compounds.
Who was the first one who came up with the idea of an atom using a cathode ray tube?
J.J Thmson
What did Ernest Rutherford concluded?
After he bombarded a very thin piece of gold foil with a very thin beam of positively charged particles (alpha) and that there is a positively charged nucleus on the particle.
Also, that the atom is mostly empty space.
Who discovered the orbitals for the electrons?
Niels Bohr
Who discovered the neutron?
James Chadwick
An electron circling the nucleus is constantly
changing direction and decelerating
The electromagnetic spectrum puts all the types of radiation in order based on their
wavelength
