12. Joints Flashcards
(20 cards)
Purpose of joints
To allow movement by connecting bone to bone via ligaments
Structures within a joint
Bones, ligaments, capsule, cartilage, bursae, meniscus
Function of ligaments
To connect bone to bone
Structure of ligament
A band of strong fibrous tissue
What is A?
Articular cartilage
Function of articular cartilage
To absorb shock and prevent friction between bones
Structure of articular cartilage
Glassy-smooth cartilage that is spongy and covers the ends of bones in the joint
Function of meniscus
To increase stability of joint and reducing wear and tear on joint surfaces.
Structure of Meniscus
A wedge of white fibrocartilage that improves the fit between adjacent bone ends
Function of pads of fat
To provide cushioning between the fibrous capsule and a bone or muscle.
What is B?
Joint capsule
What is X?
Bursa
What is C?
Ligament
What is W?
Meniscus
Function of synovial fluid
To reduce friction between articular cartilage
Structure of synovial fluid
A slippery fluid that is contained within the joint cavity
Function of bursa
To prevent friction at sites in the body where ligaments, muscles, tendons or bones might rub together.
Structure of bursa
A flattened fibrous sac lined with synovial fluid
Function of joint capsule
Helps to strengthen the joint, and synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid and lines the joint
Structure of joint capsule
Tough fibrous tissue with two layers: fibrous capsule lies outside synovial membrane
