1.2 - Lipids Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
Name the 2 groups of lipid
A
- triglycerides
- phospholipids
2
Q
How are triglycerides formed?
A
condensation of 1 glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acid molecules
3
Q
How is an ester bond formed?
A
condensation reaction between glycerol and fatty acid
4
Q
Name the components of a phospholipid
A
1 phosphate, 1 glycerol, 2 fatty acids
5
Q
Describe the emulsion test for lipids
A
- add ethanol
- then add water and shake
- positive: white/milky emulsion
NB: for control use water, final solution clear
6
Q
Function of triglycerides
A
- excellent energy store: fatty acid hydrocarbon tails
- hydrophobic fatty acid tails repel H2O (insoluble) = doesn’t affect WP of cells
7
Q
Function of phospholipids
A
- hydrophilic phosphate heads: interacts with H2O; hydrophobic fatty acid tails: repel H2O so controls what passes through bilayer
- can form glycolipids with carbohydrates: cell recognition (receptors) on cell-surface membrane
8
Q
What is a saturated fatty acid?
A
only C-C bonds in hydrocarbon chain
9
Q
What is an unsaturated fatty acid?
A
at least one C=C bond in hydrocarbon chain
10
Q
What do phospholipids form when in contact with water?
A
micelles
