What is the purpose of a dental prosthesis? (4)

A
  1. Replaces lost tissues (teeth and bone)
  2. Restores normal function (eating, speech)
  3. Restores (or even improves) normal appearance
  4. Prevents undesirable effects of tooth loss, e.g. drifting, overeruption of teeth & tooth wear

What are some disadvantages of fixed restorations? (8)

A
  1. Not suitable for long spans
  2. Don’t replace missing alveolar bone
  3. Not always permanent (eg. RBBs can de-bond)
  4. Adjacent teeth may need crown prep (damage?)
  5. Surgery required for implants (complications also)
  6. Treatment irreversible (except RBB)
  7. Failure can cause suffering (eg. implants)
  8. Some treatment costly or long appointments

A
  1. Alveolar bone loss in extraction sites
  2. Remaining natural teeth can change position
  3. Occlusal plane changes
  4. Changes to dynamic occlusal schemes (excursive movements)
  5. Extra occlusal load on remaining natural teeth
  6. Changes to speech sounds
  7. Changes to facial appearance
  8. Patients feeling self-conscious with low self esteem

What are some disadvantages of dentures? (6)

A
  1. Removable (associated with old age)
  2. Often less well tolerated by patients (bulky, loose or uncomfortable)
  3. Metal clasps often visible
  4. Plaque traps (caries/periodontitis)
  5. Ulcers/pain underneath sometimes
  6. Need maintaining (or replacing)
