Q

What is a ball-peen hammer and what is it used for?

A

A ball-peen or the machinist’s hammer, is a type of peening hammer used in metalworking. It has two heads, one flat and the other, called the peen which rounded. It is used in rivetting, bending and peening operations.

Q

What precautions must be taken when using a Phillips-screwdriver?

A

When using a Phillips-screwdriver you should ensure that:
* You are using the correct screwdriver size for the fastener being worked on
* The screwdriver is held firmly in recess and square with screw.

17
Q

How do you regrind a standard screwdriver blade?

A
  • Make the sides of the blade slightly concave by holding side of blade tangential to the periphery of the grinding wheel. Ensure to grind an equal amount of material off of each side of the blade.
  • The concave shae will allow the blade to maintain a better grip in the slot.
  • Ensure to maintain the original taper, width and thickness of the tip and grind the end square with the centreline.
  • Ensure to remove as little of the metal as possible.
  • Ensure to quench the tip frequently in cold water.
18
Q

What are the two types of open-ended wrenches?

A

The two types of double-ended wrenches are:
* Double-ended
* Single-ended

19
Q

What is an open-ended wrench?

A

An open-ended wrench has flat jaws offset at an angle of 15 degrees which slide around nuts or bolt heads and levered for loosening or tightening.

20
Q

Why are open-ended wrenches offset 15 degrees?

A

The wrench is offset 15 degress to allow the user to turn the nut or bolt in tight quarters by “flopping” the wrench.

Flopping is turning the wrench over so the other face is down each turn.

21
Q

What is a double-ended wrench?

A

A double-ended wrench has an opening on each of the head.

22
Q

What is a socket wrench and what is it used for?

A

A socket wrench or ratchet uses a reversible ratcheting mechanism which allows the user to pivot the tool back and forth to turn its socket instead of removing and repositioning a wrench to do so.

23
Q

What are the two types of drives of socket wrenches?

A

The two types of drives of socket wrenches are:
* Ratchet
* Torque-wrench handles

24
Q

What is a torque-wrench handle used for?

A

A torque-wrench handle is used when nuts or bolts must be tightened within certaain limits.

25
Q

What is another word for an allen setscrew wrench?

A

Another word for an allen setscrew wrench is a hex key

26
Q

Describe a hex key

A

A hex key is hexagonal and fit into the recesses of socket head setscrews and made of tool steel

27
Q

What sizes are hex keys available in?

A

The size of a hex keys is measured as the distance across the flats of the wrench.

1/2 diameter outside of Allen setscrew in which it is used

28
Q

What are some steps that should be taken when using a wrench?

A
  • Always select a wrench that fits the nut or bolt properly
  • Always pull the wrech, DO NOT pull the wench
  • Ensure that the nut is fully seated in the wrench jaw
  • Use the wrench in the same plane as the nut or bolt head
  • When tightening or loosening nut, give it sharp quick jerks as they are more effectie than steady pulls
  • Lubricate the threads with a dro of oil onthreads when assembling bolt and nut to ensure easy removal if neccessary
29
Q

What are the two types of pliers?

A

The two types of pliers are:
* Combination or slip-joint
* Side-cutting
* Vice-grip

30
Q

What is a combination pliers and what is it used for?

A

A combination pliers is adjustable to grip both large and small work. It is used to grip workpieces when small holes must be drilled or when bending or twisting light, thin materials

31
Q

What are side-cutting pliers and what are they used for?

A

Diagonal pliers have a plane defined by the cutting edges of the jaws which intersects at the joint rivet at an angle. They are used mainly in electrical, communications and construction work to grip, splice or cut wires, and strip insulation and bend wires of small diameters (1/8 in. or less)

32
Q

What are vice-grip pliers and what are they used for?

A

Vice-grip pliers have extremely high gripping powers due to the ajustable lever action produced by a screw in the handle that allows adjustements to various sizes.

33
Q

What are the styles of vice-grip pliers?

A

There several different styles of vice-grip pliers are:
* Standard jaws
* Needle jaws
* C-clamp jaws
