magnetism 🧲 Flashcards

1
Q

what are the properties of magnets?

A

1) magnets attract magnetic materials (nickel iron cobalt steel)
2) magnets have two poles at which magnetic effect is strongest at
3) a freely-suspended magnet comes to rest in a north-south direction
4) like poles repel and unlike poles attract

Q

define magnetic induction

A

magnetic induction is the process where an object made of magnetic material becomes a magnet when it is near or in contact with a magnet

Q

methods of magnetisation

A

1) stroking: stroke in one direction, pole produced at the end is opposite to the one it was stroked with
2) electrical method with direct current (RHGR to determine poles)

Q

methods of demagnetisation

A

1) heating and letting the magnet cool in the east-west direction
2) hammering the magnet in the east-west direction
3) placing magnet in solenoid with alternating current and withdrawing it slowly in the east-west direction

Q

soft and hard magnetic materials

A

iron is hard and steel is hard (hopefully the paper isn’t though!)
