Arteries. Capillaries and Veins Flashcards

1
Q

Arteries

A

Moves blood leaving the heart
Provide oxygen and nutrients via thin-walled capillaries to organs and tissues
Goes from elastic arteries -> to muscular arteries -> arterioles -> capillaries

Q

Tunic Intima

A

Encloses the lumen of the vessel.

Consists of simple squamous epithelium (Endothelium) with an adjacent layer of loose connective tissue

Q

Tunica Media

A

Middle coat of elastic fibers and smooth muscle (Thicker in arteries)
Arteries close to the heart have more elastic fibers
Arteries farther away have more smooth muscle

Q

Tunica Adventitia

A

The outermost layer
Sheath of loose connective tissue with elastic collagen fibers and some strands of smooth muscle
Anchor the vessels to the adjacent tissue

Q

Vasa Vasorum

A

When the tunica media is too thick that it will not permit simple diffusion of oxygen and nutrients to the smooth muscle, these piece the tunica media to do this.

Q

Valves

A

Venules and veins have these

Ensure the one-way flow of blood back to the heart

Q

Varicose veins

A

Failure of the vales will permit blood to back-up in the limbs

Q

Arteries (Lab notes)

A

Large and muscular
Deal with a lot of pressure
Very elastic
Closest to the heart at the thickest and most flexible
