Blood vessels Flashcards
Features of wall of capillaries
Walls are very thin with no elastic fibres, smooth muscle or collagen
Why are capillaries walls thin?
Ensures short diffusion distance
Arteries wall
.Thick
.Lots of collagen
.Lots of elastic fibres
.Lots of smooth muscle
Vein walls
.Thin
.Less collagen
.Less elastic fibres
.Less smooth muscle
Difference between arteries and arterioles
Arterioles have lots smooth muscle because they control how much blood goes to capillaries, more vasoconstriction and vasodilation
Arterioles have less elastin, collagens and smooth muscles in their walls
How do veins prevent pressure from being too low?
Larger veins are located between large muscles so when they contract it helps to squeeze blood towards the heart
