12.1 Study Guide Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is natural selection?
A change in allele frequencies in a population depending on environmental and reliable factors.
What is genetic drift?
A change in allele frequencies in a population depending on random events.
What is differential reproduction?
When only certain organisms reproduce with certain organisms, AKA selective mating.
What are the five fingers of evolution?
The pinkie is small population, the ring finger is particular mating, the middle finger is mutation, the first finger is movement and gene flow, and the thumb is natural selection.
What is the definition of evolution?
A descent in the population with inherited genetic modification.
How do frequencies change with natural selection compared with genetic drift?
Frequencies are more random when genetic drift happens, but natural selection is adaptive and not random.
