What is nervous tissue specified to do?
Nervous tissue is specialised to react to stimuli and to conduct impulses to various organs in the body which bring out a response to the stimulus
What is nerve tissue made up of?
Nerve tissues (in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that branch throughout the body) are all made up of specialised nerve cells called neurons
What are neurons and what do they do?
Neurons are nerve cell fibres that are easily stimulated and transmit impulses very rapidly
What is a nerve made up of?
A nerve is made up of many neurons bound together by a connective tissue
What surrounds the nerve?
A sheath of dense connective tissue called the epineurium
What can be seen in the epineurium?
Blood vessels of various sizes
What do typical neurons show?
Typical neurons show a large cell body with a large central nucleus and many cytoplasmic extensions
What are the two types of cytoplasmic extensions?
- dendrites
- single axon
What are dendrites and what do they do?
Dendrites are numerous and serve to collect incoming signals, either from the periphery or other neurons, and send them to the cell body
What are dendrons and what do they do?
Dendrons are long extensions of the neurons and they send impulses to the cell body
What is the single axon and what does it do?
The single axon is where the electrical impulse is sent away from the neuronal cell body to stimulate other neurons or tissues
