Q

Why did the landing fail. (4 )

A
  • The failed naval bombardments had alerted the Turkish, and they were well prepared
    • The Turkish had higher ground, and established fortifications on both sides of the Gallipoli Penisula and further inland
    • Allies leaders missed opportunities and underestimated the Turks’ military capabilities
    • They had no specialist landing crew - sustained heavy casualties

Q

First day was a failure because: 2

hint- troops began to —

A
  • Troops began to dig in at the Second Ridge - another stalemate/trench war which is what Gallipoli aimed to prevent
    • As more Turkish troops arrived, the Anzacs troops lost the opportunity to make significant advances against the outnumbered Turks, leaving Anzacs on the defensive
They didn’t gain nearly enough land as they aimed to and lost many men
