1.2.3 CIA Demonstration: Differences in Density Due to Temperature Flashcards

1
Q

density

A
  • mass/volume
  • Density is mass divided by volume. Less dense objects float on top of more dense objects.
  • What will happen when cold water (colored blue) is mixed with hot water (colored red)?
  • Just as energetic moving dancers take up more space than conversationalists, energetic molecules of hot water move around more quickly than molecules of cold water. This causes a given mass of hot water to take up a larger volume than the same mass of cold water. The density of hot water is therefore lower than the density of cold water, and hot water therefore floats on cold water
