SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT
However, the response from both men and women was limited and by 1905, there were only 17,000 members.
By 1915 - 100,000
1917 - 2 million
However, this remained only half the number of women actively campaigning for temperance and prohibition (theme 4).
Progress was slow and only at state level. In 1913 a woman’s suffrage march was broken up by a mob and indicates the persistence of public hostility.
RADICAL WINGS
PAUL - CUWS - more militant tactics of the British Suffragettes, including slashing paintings in art galleries, setting fire to mailboxes, and going on hunger strikes when imprisoned.
By 1918, 20 states had given women the right to vote in state elections. This was probably down to NAWSA
1919 - 19TH AMENDMENT became law 36 staes ratified
