What type of device is a storage device and what is it used for?
Storage devices are type of peripheral device used for storing, backing up and sharing data, usually for individual use where a network is not available
What is a Hard disk drive? and What is it commonly used for?
These are magnetic storage devices, commonly used as the primary internal storage device but can be external
What are 3 advantages of Hard disk drives?
Large storage capacity (1 terabyte or more)
Low cost on a per byte basis
Very reliable
What are 2 disadvantages of Hard disk drives?
Slower than SSDs at loading data
External HDDs are not as portable as some options
What is a solid state drive? and What is it commonly used for?
A solid state drive are flash memory devices commonly used as aprimary storage in portable computing devices like tablets and laptops
What are 3 advantages of solid state drives?
The data read / write speed is very fast
Low power consumption
Extremely relaible as they have no moving parts
What are 3 disadvantages of solid state drive?
Highter cost than HDDs on a per byte basis
Usually have a lower storage capacity
Only have finite number of writes
What is a SD card? and What is it commonly used for?
SD cards are small flash memory cards that arte commonly used for storage in digital cameras and some smartphones
What are 2 advantages of SD cards
They are small and portable
Easy to trasfer between devices with SD card readers
What are 2 disadvantages of SD cards?
They have very small storage capacity, generally around 64gb - greater capacity is costly
Various ‘enhancements’ to the standards, resulting in potential compatibility problems, for example SDHC and SDXC
What is a USB memory sticks? and What does it connect through?
These are small flash memory devices that connect through on a USB part
What are 3 disadvantages of USB memory stick?
Storage capacity is low when compared to SSDs and HDDs
Only have a finite number of writes before they break
Because they are small, they can be lost easily
What are 2 advantages of USB memory stick?
Extremly portable
Compatible with most computer systems via USB port
Example of optcal disks and what they are used for?
Optical disks such as CDs,DVD and Bluray disks are used for software, music and movies
What are 2 advantages of optical disks?
Smal and portable
A lot of dvices have built in capability to rea optical devices being inexpensive if needed
