GIS Flashcards
GIS: Geographic Information Systems
a computer system that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information in a particular area
Examples of GIS and Remote Sensing?
GIS: Zillow, Megan’s Law
Remote Sensing: Google Earth Engine, Land Sat
Vector Data: Point or Node, Line or Arc, Area or Polygons
-Vector data consists of individual
points, which are stored as pairs of
coordinates (x, y)
-Used in GIS data
Point or Node represent a single point on a map
Line or Arc represents things like streets on a map (or rivers)
Area or Polygons represents a community
Power of the GIS is overlap and spatial analysis what can it be used for?
1)Urban planning: where the gas lines, water lines, etc are
2)Business: planning where to place businesses
3)Transportation
4)Health: see if pesticide use is the cause of ailments by mapping fields, crops, and pesticide use
5)Natural Resource Management: monitoring land cover change, light pollution effect on plants and animals, projected global warming, phenology GIS DATABASE
Remote Sensing
Study of the Earth without direct contact
Raster Data
-remote sensing is raster data
Pixel within Grid Cell (like a camera)
Each Pixel recorded in the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Wavelength
Visible, Infrared, Thermal
