Q

What is the superior orbital fissure and where is it located?

A

It transmits most of the other vascular and neural structures into the orbit. Attachment point for LR muscle. Located at the gap between the lesser and greater wings of the sphenoid

Q

What is the inferior orbital fissure and where is it located?

A

It transmits the zygomatic branch of the maxillary nerve and the ascending branches from the pterygopalatine ganglion. It separates the greater wing of the sphenoid and the maxilla

Q

What is the annulus of zinn and where is it located?

A

It is a ring of fibrous tissue surrounding the optic nerve at its entrance at the apex of the orbit. It is the common origin of the four recti muscles. Located anterior to superior orbital fissure and optic canal

Q

What is the cavernous sinus and where is it located?

A

It is one of several drainage pathways for the brain that sits in the middle. The cavernous sinus is located on either side of the sella turcica and superior to the sphenoid bone.
