Encephalitis treatment
Same as Meningitis + turn and reposition due to immobility and admin stool softeners; admin acyclovir (antiviral)
What may be present from a skull fracture and what would you do
Clear drainage from nose and ears; o Collect this fluid on gauze for testing (life threatening emergency + can lead to meningitis)
Frontal lobe TBI damage (brocas area)

Poor auditory perception, long term memory, sensation, + receptive speech center; confabulation
S/S of brain tumor that ,ay cause ICP
Ataxia, papilledema, vomiting, headache, decrease LOC, personality changes, hemiparesis, abnormal reflexes, and cranial nerve palsies
Another med besides mannitol for decreasing intracranial pressure
high concentration sodium chloride solutions
Physical interventions for decreasing intracranial pressure
Raise HOB, hyperventilation, drain CSF, Hemicraniectomy w/ durotomy
What is a positive babinski response
heel of the reflex hammer and stimulates the outside of the sole of the foot- when the big toe bends up and back to the top of the foot and the other toes follow in a fan motion
what elicits a babinski reponse
Could indicate CNS disorder or ALS
Most common headache
tension
symptoms of tension headaches
Mild to moderate pain- bilaterally in the occipital area, pain on the face/head/neck, sensitivity to light
Possible causes of tension headaches
Not enough liquid and electrolytes; Veins vasoconstrict to get blood pumping faster before you even get a headache
Medications to give patients with tension headaches
Calcium Channel Blockers and vasodilators ( Norvasc and amlodipine) which are given to increase blood pressure and slow the heart rate
MIgraine meds
same as tension + also ibuprofen/acetaminophen/aspirin/anticholinergics/sedatives/Antianxiety and antidepressants/ possibly caffeine
