Physical & Chemical Properties/Changes Flashcards
what is a chemical change?
when matter changes into an entirely different substance with different chemical properties (aka chemical reaction)
what are chemical properties?
properties that can be measured or observed only when matter undergoes a change to become an entirely different kind of matter
what are some chemical properties
rusting, reactivity, flammability
what is reactivity
the ability of matter to combine chemically with other substances
what is flammability
the ability of matter to burn
what is a physical change
change in one or more physical properties of matter without any change in chemical properties
examples of physical change(s):
changes in size, shape, or state of matter
what are some processes that cause physical change
cutting, bending, dissolving, freezing, boiling, and melting
can you reverse physical changes?
SOME physical changes can be reversed
example: when liquid water freezes to form ice, it can be changed back to liquid water by heating and melting the ice (because the chemical properties of matter remain the same in a physical change, a physical change is often easy to reverse)
what are physical properties?
properties that can be measured or observed without matter changing to an entirely different substance (they are typically things you can detect with your senses)
what are some physical properties
- typically can be things detectable with your senses: things you can see, hear, smell, or feel
- state of matter: liquid, solid, gas
- odor, boiling point, ability to conduct heat, conductivity (ability to conduct electricity), ability to dissolve in other substances, melting point, color, hardness
