How can density be measured?

A

Density is a measure of how much mass (in grams) is contained in the volume of one cubic centimeter(cm3) of the material and it is the relationship of mass and volume.
The formula:
Density(g/cm3) =Mass(g)
——————-
Volume(cm3)
Note: When the volume is a solid, we usually use cm3 and if it’s a liquid or a gas we usually use mL

What is Average density?

A

When we calculate the overall mass divided by the overall volume to get the average density of the object. The average density is reduced if the object holds air because it depends on both the density of the actual material and the low density of air contained inside the object. By reducing an object’s average density we make it more buoyant.

Density

A

Density is a measure of how closely packed atoms are in a substance.
Density will change as temperature changes
As a substance is heated, particles tend to spread, making it less dense (ice is an exception.)
Solid tend to be more dense than liquid; Liquid tends to be more dense than gasses.

How can Volume affect the density of the object? What happens if you compress an object?

A

The lower the volume the more dense the object is. The more the volume the less dense the object is. If you compress an object the object will be more dense and if you don’t compress an object the object will be less dense.

Low density of ice

A

Water is unusual because it is less dense as a solid than as a liquid.
Ice Floats on cool water because ice is a solid and water as a solid is less dense than as a liquid so it will float.
Ice: Hydrogen bonds are stable
Liquid water: Hydrogen bonds constantly break and re-form.
