What is nationalism?
The ideas that world is seperated into states with each having a right to autonomy and self-determination
What is a multinational state?
A state that contains more than one nation eg. Canada
What is a nation-state?
State that only has one nation under it eg. Japan
What is nation building?
Promoting a sense of belonging to the nation and creating a national identity
What are strategies and implications of nation bulding?
Strat: flags, anthems, national language, state programs, military
Implic.: some nations may be erased from the nation (such as cultural groups)> it can either amplify or eradicate diversity
How does one get a nationality
- Being born in state’s soil
- Having citizen parent(s) depending on where
- by application after living there for a certain period of time
- Migration
What is ctizenship?
the rights and responsibilities of a citizen under the jurisdiction of their states
citizens can participate in democratic processes (vote, protest..) and benefit from state programs and obtain resources (healthcare)
have a sense of belonging to their state

The individual interacts with the state and play a part in the community
