The Folly of Faith plus works

A

Gal 3:1

“1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? 4 Have you experienced so much in vain–if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham ‘believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

The people in Galations, placed themself back under the law by placing their faith for salvation in their own good works rather than in the work of Christ. They became a “faith plus works” church, which Paul calls “foolish”. Paul makes it clear in this passge that salvation is by faith alone and not by works.

Jesus is the passover lamb Exodus

A

Exodus 12:3-13

3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[a] for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Isaiah 53:5-6

But He was pierced through for our
transgressions . . . All of us like sheep have
gone astray, each of us has turned
to his own way; but the Lord has caused
the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth; like
a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like
a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
so He did not open His mouth.

John 1:29

The next day he saw Jesus coming
to him and said, Behold, the Lamb
of God who takes away
the sin of the world!

John 1:36

he looked at Jesus as He walked, and
said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

John 19:14 -15

Now it was the day of preparation for the
Passover; it was about the [a]sixth hour.
And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your
King!” 15 So they cried out, “Away
with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!”

John 19:30

Therefore when Jesus had received
the sour wine, He said, It is finished!
And He bowed His head
and gave up His spirit.

Luke 23:44-46

… and darkness fell over the whole land until
the ninth hour . . . He breathed His last.

Revelation 5:8-9

…the twenty-four elders fell down before
the Lamb . . . saying, Worthy are You to take
the book and break its seals; for You were slain,
and purchased for God with Your blood men from
every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

Christ’s resurection

A

The tomb secured (Matthew 27:62-66)

62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

The tomb opened (Matthew 28:1-4)

28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angelic announcement (Matthew 28:5-8)

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
