pollution Flashcards

1
Q

what is a contaminant and what is pollution?

Q

what is a secondary pollutant?

A

primary pollutants undergoing chemical changes within a natural reservoir forming a different form of pollutant

Q

what is above ground pollution?

A

deterioration of land surfaces as a result of contamination
ex. landfill, soil contamination, pesticides and herbicides

Q

what is DDT?

A

pesticide that was seen as a miracle compound
- it can bioaccumulate and biomagnify
- interfered with calcium metabolism in birds

Q

what are some examples of water pollution?

A
  • human sewage
  • PCBs
  • mercury
  • heavy metals
  • fertilizers
  • oil spills
  • pharmaceuticals

Q

how does mercury water pollution work?

A

mercury gas is not considered a pollutant until it is converted by bacteria in water systems to become methylmercury (bioaccumulates and biomagnifies)

Q

what are the effects of phosphorus fertilization?

A

eutrophication!
excessive P in waterways causes algae bloom -> algae die -> increase in decomposition -> removes large amount of oxygen from water -> fish die from lack of oxygen

Q

what are the effects of pharmaceuticals in water systems?

A
  • can enter food chains and directly impact wildlife
  • can be reintroduced back into drinking water
–> increases prevalence of antibiotic resistance and induces gender change in fish

Q

what is acid rain?

A

when sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides mix with atmospheric molecules to create acids and mix with precipitation to create acid rain -> removes important plant nutrients in soils and kills species in freshwater ecosystems
