No capillary action

Harder to handle
Harder to knot
Require different knotting techniques for greater security
Advantages of natural suture material
Easy to handle
Easy to knot (compared to synthetic monofilament sutures)
High histocompatibility
Disadvantages of natural suture material
Moderate/ high tissue reaction
Low tensile strength
Advantage of synthetic suture material
High tensile strength
Predictable biological behaviour
Disadvantage of synthetic suture material
Poorer knotting than natural materials (synthetic monofilament)
Give 3 problems with eyed needles
- Double strand of suture material needed = increased tissue damage
- multiple use needle = can become blunt
- Increased tissue trauma
