L35: de novo FA and TAG synthesis Flashcards

Q

When is lipogenesis active and where does it take place?

A

de novo Lipogenesis is active in the fed state (a high I/G, absorptive phase).

  • Lipogenesis occurs mostly in the liver. Ironically, only small amounts of de novo lipogenesis occur in adipose tissue.
  • Cellular location: lipogenesis occurs in the cytosol on the surface of the SER (smooth endoplasmic reticulum).
  • The purpose of lipogenesis is to store energy in the form of triacylglycerol, and to supply membrane lipids
