Histology Flashcards
What does simple squamous epithelium line?
- Inside of blood vessels (endothelium)
- Outside of the lungs (mesothelium)
- Abdominal organs (peritoneum)
What does simple cuboidal epithelium line?
- Kidney tubules
- Small ducts (e.g. in the salivary glands)
What does simple columnar epithelium line?
- Stomach
- Intestines
- Uterus
On what type of epithelium are cilia and microvilli found?
- Simple columnar epithelium
What does stratified squamous non-keratinising epithelium line?
mouth, oesophagus, oropharynx and vagina
What does stratified squamous keratinising epithelium line?
Thin skin- e.g. the eyelids
Thick skin- sites of the body exposed to excess abrasion e.g. palms of the hand and soles of the feet
What does pseudostratified columnar epithelium line?
- The respiratory tract from nasal passage to the level of respiratory bronchiole.
- Trachea and upper part of the respiratory tract.
What is urothelium and what does it line?
- It is a specialised stratified epithelium (transitional epithelium)
- It has a surface layer of umbrella cells which serves to render the epithelium waterproof
- Transitions from pseudostratified to stratified (at the surface)
- Lines collecting part of the urinary tract (renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra)
Why are lymphocytes smaller than nerve cells?
Why do lymphocytes have so little cytoplasm when compared with nerve cells?
- Small lymphocytes are not metabolically active and are poorly differentiated in comparison with nerve cells.
- As lymphocytes are dormant cells, they have a lesser amount of cytoplasm till stimulated
