Cadel

A

A cadel is a calligraphic decorative extension to the ascending or descending strokes of letters, usually on the first or last lines of a page. They sometimes feature human or animal heads.

    -Pattern is visible but no color change

A

1, roman numeral on center of lower margin
on first page of quire. Often lost when pages
are trimmed
2, Catchwords/stitch words. Became
common 13th
3, Leaf signatures. First letter/symbol for quire. Later roman numeral for bifolio. Lower right side

-Meant to be carried under belt with a hook
-Large piece of leather turned into a knot that fastens to belt
-Only 25 survived in the world – because of outdated texts and wear and tear
-Devotional texts
-Should not be confused with chemise
