Cadel
A cadel is a calligraphic decorative extension to the ascending or descending strokes of letters, usually on the first or last lines of a page. They sometimes feature human or animal heads.
3 basic forms of binding
Leather or parchment.
Leather cover on wooden borads (most common)
Treasure bindings (liturgical. Lot of stones and metal)
Gilt edge
Gold on edge
Supralibros
A bit like ex libris
-Mark of ownership stamped on cover of book
-Monogram or coat of arms
-Only used from early modern period onward
2 ways of blind tooling
- Stamping the design onto wet leather binding
-Pattern is visible but no color change
2.Work pattern into leather with hot metal tool
-Motif would have darker color
Fenestra
-small window on front
-Piece of parchment with title or author is put behind fenestra
Ball taps
-made from colored leather pasted to other margins
-Worked like bookmarks
-Important texts were marked with ball-taps
3 ways to order quires
1, roman numeral on center of lower margin
on first page of quire. Often lost when pages
are trimmed
2, Catchwords/stitch words. Became
common 13th
3, Leaf signatures. First letter/symbol for quire. Later roman numeral for bifolio. Lower right side
Examples of special book bindings
Girdle books, book cases, vade mecum
Girdle book
-Meant to be carried under belt with a hook
-Large piece of leather turned into a knot that fastens to belt
-Only 25 survived in the world – because of outdated texts and wear and tear
-Devotional texts
-Should not be confused with chemise
Book cases
-Small
-To be worn around neck
Vade mecum
-Piece of paper or parchment
-Almanac or medical information on several sheets
-Folded in a way that you don’t have to sit down to read

1, A survey of all medieval, handwritten books in Dutch texts.
2, Collect the data to describe history of all things written in Dutch during the Middle Ages as a coherent whole.
-Describing as many manuscripts as possible himself
-Collecting existing descriptions by others
-Index cards with previous owners – over 300.000 index cards written
-Descriptions of manuscripts
