Q

Which rule can we use to find the direction of the magnetic field in a wire which has current flowing through it?

A

Right hand rule. Fingers indicate direction of magnetic field when thumb is in direction of current.

Q

Why are electromagnets useful?

A

They were only be a magnetic field as long as there is current flowing. This allows us to turn the magnetic field on and off

Q

What are the 4 ways we can increase an electromagnet’s strength?

A
  • Increase the current that flows through the solenoid
  • Increase the number of turns in the solenoid while keeping the length of it the same
  • Add an iron core to the inside of the solenoid
