Mechanical, Chemical, Enzymes Digestion Flashcards

1
Q

What is mechanical digestion?

A

Happens in the mouth
Teeth cut and grind food into small pieces (increases surface area)
Happens in stomach as it’s muscular wall churns food

Q

What is chemical digestion?

A

Starts in mouth
Continues to stomach and small intestine
Involves breaking chemical bonds in large molecules
Result in formation of smaller molecules
Enzymes are responsible for chemical digestion

Q

What are enzymes? Why do we need them?

A

Every enzyme is specific (can carry out only one reaction)
We need different enzymes to digest different types of food molecule.

Q

Name and Give in detail the Digestion Processes

A

Food passes from mouth to stomach by PERISTALSIS (relaxation and contraction of muscles)
Food is digested mechanically by teeth, tongue + stomach chemically by enzymes
Digested food absorbed into bloodstream in small intestine across villi? Villi increases surface area of small intestine, are thin + have good blood supply close to its surface to get rid of digested food.
