Alliteration

Relating to particular events, mostly in ancient Greek or Roman times

Relating to or hinting at the bible and/or it’s quotes
Personification
Giving non-human things human characteristics
Eg “the flowers fought against the wind”
Hyperbole
Exaggerating a point or meaning of a sentence
Irony
Statement used to contradict reality
Assonance
Repeated vowel sounds
Onomatopoeia
A formation word to indicate the sound made by something
Eg “bang”
Similie
Comparing something to something else
“As tall as a tree”
Metaphor
Saying something is something else
Eg “her teeth were white pearls”
Pathetic Fallacy
Using weather features to reflect a text
Anaphora
The repetition of the same word at the begging of successive clauses, lines or sentences
Sibilance
The use of the ‘s’ sound
Eg “Serpent spirits”
Verb
A word to describe an action that forms the main part of a sentence
Eg make
Noun
A word used to identify any class of people, places or things
Eg Italy
Caesura
A break between words within a metrical foot
Volta
A rhetorical shift or dramatic change in emotions or thoughts
Adverb
A word or phrase that modifies or qualifies some word classes in relation of place, time or circumstances.
Eg “quickly”
Hypophora
Exaggerating point of jest
Paradox
Creating a truth from two contradictory ideas
Repetition
Emphasising a point by using a word or phrase many times
“I am…. I am… I am…”
Juxtaposition
Making two things being seen or placed close together have contrasting effects
Iambic Pentameter
A line of verse with five metrical feet consisting of one short syllable and one long syllable
Allegory
A story, poem or picture can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Eg Tulips has a hidden meaning of stolen identity
Haiku
A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables in 3 lines of 5, 7 and 5
Oxymoron
Where opposite terms appear together eg. Bitter Sweet
Plosives
Repetitive use of ‘B’, ‘D’, ‘G’, ‘P’, ‘T’ and ‘K’ sounds for effect

Analogy
Two concepts that are similar and comparable to simplify the theme through contrast
Cliche
A scenario, term or phrase that is overused and unoriginal
