A

as all English people belonged to the church it was a central aspect of many people lives, it provided the focus for popular entertainment such as festivals as well as offering charity,good fellowship and the chance of ordinary people to contribute to the good of their local community

the social and political elites maintaining social control through its encouragement of good behaviour, obedience and stress on the values of the community

what was the political role of the church?

A

as the highest position was held by the pope in Rome it is typical of henrys carefulness and the popes influence that he sought to marry Elizabeth of York,however at this time popes did little to interfere with the direct runnings of the church with the relationship being completely Erastain - the papacy had no objection to the way in which Henry used his wealth of the Church to reward those churchmen who he gave the highest political office
- it was common for senior clergy men to participate at high level in the political process
- John Morton and Richard fox where churchmen who exercised the most power under Henry
