Clinical signs of ULG

A

Inflammation of subcutaneous lymphangitis vessels, formation of nodules, abscesses and ulcers.
Lymphatic becomes corded (harden).
May cause abortion, pyelonephritis and mastitis in equine.

Causes/sources of infection

A

Poor management, where common in horses picketed together on muddy standings, where they are subject to kicks, shackle chafes and other injuries

Contaminated liter and grooming utensils as fomites

Flies as mechanical vectors

Progression of the lesion

A

Lesion are painful, progress from papules to pustules, eventually rupture, exude pus and become encrusted,

Control of ULG

A

Isolate cases
Dispose soiled dressings carefully, general hygiene and good stable management including manure disposal, fly control and wound preventation
Standings should be kept dry
