What does maternal deprivation lead to

A
  • Negative impact on Emotional , social, physical, intellectual development (mental retardation-abnormally low IQ)
  • Continuity hypothesis: prolonged separation = issues in adult hood
  • and impact internal working model, unable to be good parent
  • effectionless psychopathy: inability to experience emotions or guilt

Outline 44 thieves study

A

Interviews 44 Juvenal thieves and 44 ‘normal’ kids
14 thieves showed affectionless psychopathy and 86% of the 14 experienced maternal deprivation in Critical period (2 1/2 years)
-shows link between affectionless psychopathy and maternal deprivation not cause and effect though

A
  • beta bias- don’t know effects of girls
  • results are correlational no cause or effect other factors could have caused later problems eg poverty
  • can’t explain two of the ‘normal’ kids who weren’t labelled affectionless psychopaths but experienced maternal dep in critical period.

A

Studied 5 kids in care while mum was in hospital

  • provided great substitute mothering and arranged visits with mum
  • children coped well with separation and happy on mums return

Stages on separation
Protest- outward display of sadness, cry,refuse comfort.
Despair-hopelessness doesn’t think parent will return , withdrawn, self sooth
Detachment-accept comfort from others. Rejects mother at return no emotional bond.
