Water Flashcards
Is hydrogen or oxygen delta negative?
Oxygen - Delta Negative
Hydrogen - Delta Positive
Why is oxygen delta negative?
There is an unequal share of electrons, and they lean towards oxygen
What is a polar molecule?
A molecule with regions of positivity and negativity
Why are hydrogen bonds drawn as a dotted line?
They are weak bonds individually
Water is a solvent. What does this mean and what is the importance of it?
- It can dissolve substances
Importance - It can dissolve polar molecules like glucose but not non-polar molecules
What are the important functions of water?
- Solvent
- Medium for chemical reactions
- Transport medium
- Coolant
- Habitat
Where is water a transport medium for in animals and plants?
Animals - Blood
Plants - Xylem (transports water and mineral ions)
- Phloem (transports dissolved sugars)
What is a transpiration stream, and how does it rely on hydrogen bonds?
- The movement of water up a xylem
- Cohesion between the water molecules
- Adhesion between a water molecule and the xylem surface
What is cohesion and adhesion?
Cohesion - The attraction between the same type of molecule
Adhesion - The ability of a substance to bind to a different/unlike molecule
