Curitiba’s CO2 emissions are 65% lower than other countries in Latin America

A

2007- Curitiba launched government scheme that encouraged landowners to preserve green areas, limiting urban sprawl
people who created parks were exempt form local and federal taxes
there are now 28 parks in the city including the 1.4million m^2 Barigui Park, which absorbs flood waters

A

city is only one of 8 in the world which collects 100% of its waste and 70% is recycled
government launched ‘The Green Exchange Programme’ in 1989 - residents receive 1kg of food or bus tickets for every 4kg of recyclable waste collected
scheme led to 6800 tonnes of waste being collected each year

A

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system - dedicated bus lanes - bus journeys are quick
over 700,000 people use it daily
the city’s carbon emissions are 25% lower per capita than the average Brazilian City
main centre is also pedestrianised - people leave cars home
