listening is: active, intentional, conscious effort, connect and notice it

hearing is: passive, not paying full attention, background sound, not as much meaning

  • music publishers set up offices in NYC area which was named tin pan alley (because the old rickeyty piano heard aroudn the area sounded lke banging on tin pan)
  • exhange of music was first instance of music tech, kept music cistulating in this area

1890s = victorian-style ballads and waltz songs

came in = ragtime! by african american musicians
because TPA music required ACCESS to music, literacy, money so ragtime was adaptations of TPA music live

PW’s symphonic jazz gave peopel a very easy thing to dance to SO he helped establish dancing in a popular context (rather than just a performance?)

specific dances were created that had basic steps that you could add fancy things into if desired, they were all named specifically
