Genetics (2) Flashcards
Where is genetic information contained?
Genetic information is contained in DNA in the nucleus of the cell
How is the human body organized genetically from large to small?
Cells, Chromosomes, DNA
What can provide information on human genetics?
Pedigree, breeding results from animals/plants(Punnet square), human DNA,
What is the 50/50 Rule?
Each parent contributes ½ of the chromosomes to the offspring. Recessive traits HAS to be passed on by BOTH parents
How can DNA fingerprinting be used?
ID a person at a crime scene, diagnose genetic disease, ID a person (alive or dead), determine if related to someone
What does a pedigree look like with a recessive trait? A dominant trait?
Recessive trait (diabetes)- Usually Recessive trait “disappears” in F1 generation
Dominate trait (Marfan Syndrome, polydactamine)- trait shows in every generation unless recessive pairs up on both sides
Know ABO and +/- blood typing
ABO blood typing is co-dominant
+/- is regular dominant/recessive
A and B are dominant
O is recessive
Rh+ is dominant
Rh- is recessive
different blood types
Blood Type A–AA/AO
Blood Type B–BB/BO
Blood Type AB–AB
Blood Type O–OO
Can someone be blood type O from Dad being Blood Type A and Mom being Blood Type B?
Yes–Both Mom and Dad carry recessive traits
Dad–AO
Mom–BO
Kid- OO
Can a kid be Blood Type AB+ if Mom is Blood type AB- and Dad is blood type BO-?
Mom–AB-
Dad-BO-
NO–Even though it is possible to get a kid that is AB blood type, Mom and Dad are Rh- and can not make kid AB+
Can someone be Rh- when both parents are Rh+?
YES–Both Mom and Dad carry recessive traits
Dad is +-
Mom is +-
Kid is –
What is a pedigree?
the record of descent of an animal, showing it to be purebred.
