Black Holes Flashcards

1
Q

What did Michell and Laplace theorize?

A

Light is affected by gravity in same manner as projectiles.

Theorized concept of Dark Stars; stars with a strong enough gravitational field to prevent light from every escaping. (Invisible)

Q

How do Dark Stars connect to Einstein’s Relativity?

A

Black holes are a singularity in General Relativity (warping of space-time goes off scale); a place in space where gravity pull is so strong that light cannot escape.
(Gravity is strong because matter is in a tiny space)

Q

What are the origins of a black hole?

A

When a neutron star exceeds its mass limit and neutron degeneracy pressure fails (compression of neutrons in core that combats gravitational collapse of a star fails)

Q

Spaghettification

A

Black hole would stretch an individual into a thin ribbon since the gravity is stronger below than at an individual’s head.

Q

How are Black Holes detected?

A

Radiation and Gravitational influence; surrounding material will be funneled by gravity in a disk shape around black hole.
