Stave 1

A

Cold, bleak xmas eve (7yrs post Marley’s death)
Scrooge is in his counting house with Bob Cratchit (shivering cos S refuses to spend money on coal for fire)
Fred visits and invites him to party - S refuses
2 gentlemen arrive and ask S for a donation to charity for the poor - S refuses (are there no workhouses?)
Ghost of Jacob Marley visits carrying heavy chains from his past - warns S his has one chance to change his ways to avoid the same fate, tells him about the 3 spirits

Stave 2

A

Scrooge awakens and the Ghost of Christmas Past (GoCP) appears
Taken on a journey to revisit his past
- boarding school as a lonely neglected child
- reminded of the death of sister Fan after Fred’s birth
- Fezziwig’s party (where he was an apprentice)
- Belle who ends their relationship (“a golden idol has replaced you”)
- sees Belle with a large, happy family
Scrooge begs to go home

A

Ghost of Christmas Present (GoCPre) takes S through streets on xmas morning
- sees joyous people buying food at market
- xmas’s celebrated at different places (miner’s cottage/ship/lighthouse)
- Bob’s house, a joyous family with a small feast - sees Tiny Tim seriously ill but happy, GoCPre tells S that without help TT will die
- Fred’s xmas party - tells his family he feels sorry for S
GoCPre grows visibly older
- shows S “Ignorance and Want”
- S shows concern and Spirit mocks him

A

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (GoCYtC) silently guides Scrooge through scenes relating to the death of a disliked man on a future xmas day
- businessmen who will only attend “if lunch is provided”
- sale of the mans stolen possessions
- poor couple relived their finances can be sorted
S asks GoCYtC to show him some tenderness relating to death
- taken to Cratchit’s who are mourning for the death of TT
S is taken to a graveyard and finds the stone with his own name on it
- horrified to realise he is the man from earlier
- vows to change his ways and honour xmas

Stave 5

A

On xmas morning S is a changed man
- he has a chance to redeem himself and is desperate to spread xmas spirit
- sends a giant turkey to Cratchit’s for dinner
- gives Bob a raise
- attends Fred’s party
Embodies the spirit of xmas and treats everyone kindly
Becomes a father figure to TT who survives!
